Statement by Ambassador Mitsuru Kitano at the IAEA Board of Governors Meeting in October 2016

2016/10/3

Item 3: Appointment of the Director General

Thank you, Mr. Chair,

Japan supports the recommended action of the Board in line with the established procedures for the appointment of the Director General.

Mr Chair,

The General Conference last week has reminded all of us here that the IAEA has played a critical role in ensuring nuclear non-proliferation as well as promoting peaceful uses of nuclear energy in the last sixty years. It should continue to do so in addressing many pressing challenges ahead.

In that context, we are delighted to hear so many heads of delegation to the General Conference extended warm words of appreciation to the achievement of Mr. Amano and his team during his service as Director General in the last seven years. We are also encouraged to hear that quite a number of them even went on to express their unequivocal support to his candidacy for the next term.

We believe that continued leadership of the Secretariat with united support of Member States would serve the best interests of the Agency and Member States at this juncture. We thus would like to make once again our appeal to all Member States for your support to the appointment of Mr. Amano for the next term as Director General.

We also reiterate once again our support for the established procedures for the appointment of the Director General.

Thank you, Mr. Chair,
